Piano

recitals nashuaDo I need a piano at home to take piano lessons?
Ideally, the student has a piano at home, but one can start lessons with our piano teachers by using an electric keyboard to practice on. Many of our students purchase or rent small electric keyboards to practice with at home. We recommend keyboards that have regular sized keys with a touch sensitive response. With a touch sensitive keyboard, when a key is pressed harder it will play louder and when pressed softer it plays quieter.

Do you take children?
Yes, for piano lessons we take students 5 years and older.

What books will I need to start?
We generally have students start with the Alfred series, which are available at our school.

Drums

drum lessonsDo I need a full drum set to take drum lessons?
One does not need a full drum set to begin drum lessons. Students can start lessons by using a practice pad which is a small, dinner plate sized pad that usually costs $20-$30. This device is used for practicing basic drum rhythms at home.

Do you take children?
Yes 6 and over.

Guitar FAQ's

Do you teach acoustic or electric?
We teach both.

Do you teach students to read music?
We do, however it is not required and we generally don’t teach it to beginner students. We feel it is far more important for a student to become familiar with the mechanics of the instrument (which can be a challenge itself) and to start making music rather than worrying about whether the note they are playing is C or C-minor.  In this case, we use TAB which is very easy to understand.

What shoud I bring for my first lesson?
Just your guitar and any materials you have been studying. You do not need to bring an amp or cable as they are available for you to use here.

Do I need a guitar to start?
The short answer is yes. It’s important that the student work on the assignments given by their instructor with the guitar. However, it is possible to do an introductory lesson without a guitar.

Do you recommend acoustic or electric guitar to start off with?
There is a myth that acoustic guitar is easier to play; this is absolutely not true. An electric guitar has smaller/thinner strings that are easier to get sound out of, and the string height is almost always lower which enables easier fretting. Outside of that, we suggest getting a guitar that is closest to the music that you want to play. For example, if you are playing heavy metal an electric guitar would be appropriate. If you’re more interested in folk music, an acoustic guitar makes the most sense.

Do you take children?
Yes, for guitar lessons we take children 6 years and over.

Do you rent guitars?
As of now, we do not as there hasn’t been any real demand for it. The good news is that guitar starter packs are relatively inexpensive and tend to retain their value quite well. So even if you don’t stick with guitar lessons for whatever reason you should be able to get most if not all of your investment back by re-selling the package.

Where do you recommend purchasing guitar packs and accessories?
We sell metronomes, tuners, strings, and other guitar accessories here at North Main Music. For guitar starter packs we recommend Guitar Center on DW Highway in Nashua. They have great guitars and knowledgeable salespeople.
